Congratulations Mr Gill
Huge congratulations go to Mr Andrew Gill, our Physics teacher who has been awarded the Mellano Trophy for being the Champion of Champions at the British Motor Cycle Racing Club (BMCRC or Bemsee) for 2017.
During this year’s motorcycle racing season, Andrew won two separate championships: EDIasia Formula 400 and Thunderbike Sport. He mainly raced a Kawasaki ZXR400 in both classes but did also race a self-built Yamaha FZR600 in the Thunderbike Sport class for a time (until he needed to sell this in order to fund the rest of the racing season). Andrew clinched both championships in the final round at Snetterton in October. BMCRC’s special awards evening was held on the 18th November, where all championship winners and podium finishers are given their trophies. The club also presents a variety of special awards with the top two being Rider of the Year and Champion of Champions. Due to him being the only double championship winner, Andrew was given the most prestigious award, the Champion of Champions, also known as the Mellano Trophy.
This trophy has an impressive history as it was previously given to the likes of Barry Sheene and Mike Hailwood.
The trophy is now on display at the Brooklands Museum.
