No.  55

5th March, 2010

 SPORTS REPORT W/E 05.03.2010

Monday, 1st March u11 Netball 'v' Ash

Our opponents were a well organised team and although our girl's tried really hard they were out played.  Player of the match – Georgia Mullis.

Wednesday, 3rd March u12 Netball 'v' Chilton Cantelo

This game started very evenly with each team taking it is turns to score.  At half time we had just sneaked a two goal lead.  During the final phase of the match we found  a surge and scored a win.  Player of the match – Ellie Cunningham.

Wednesday, 3rd March u14 Netball 'v' Chilton Cantelo

Once again the girl's in this team fell victims to the incredible height of their opponents.  We actually played very well with the ball being passed freely and accurately.  However, there is nothing you can do when the ball is being held two feet above your head out of reach and we lost.  Player of the match – Ellen Bazley.

Thursday, 4th March u14 Football 'v' Sexey's

With 5 of the u14 squad deciding they did not wish to play at the last minute, it was left to Years 7 and 8 to make up the team.  Therefore, physically we were disadvantaged, however, an extremely exciting game ensued with play racing from one end of the pitch to the other and both teams taking it in turn to score.  With two minutes to go we were trailing 5-4, we scrambled the ball over for 5-5 and a fitting draw looked to be the end result.  Alas, with barely 30 seconds left Sexey's sneaked another and we lost what was an epic encounter.  Player of the match –

Philip Bridge.

Fixtures for next week are:-

YEAR 11 SCIENCE ASSESSMENT

The Year 11 groups being taught by Mr Ennals and Mr Smith will be doing their final science practical assessment on Wednesday, 10th March.

YEAR 11 PUPILS

We have had a number of pupils from Year 11 leaving the school premises to go into town during lunchtime.  As you will be aware this is against the school rules because of fire regulations, etc.  If there is an occasion where your child has to go into town, please may they be furnished with a letter for THAT DAY ONLY.  We will then follow up the letter with a phone call later in the morning.  We appreciate your

co-operation in this matter.

Mrs S Scannell

SPANISH STUDENT

Are there any Year 10's or 11's who would like to host a Spanish student for 3 weeks in June/July end of term.  Please contact Mr Bate for more details.

DEBATING

On Sunday (7th March) we are taking three teams to the Regional Finals of the International Competition for Young Debaters at The Oxford Union.  Tamsin Eddey, Natasha Dennington, Hattie  Stanley, Charlotte Rock,

Dominic Stephens and Jeannette Franks will be representing the school.  This is the first time we have entered this particularly demanding competition which uses the British Parliamentary style, so it will be interesting to see how well we do.

COMMEMORATION SERVICE

Parents please note that this year there are two separate Commemoration Services being held this year at the United Reformed Church,

Princes Street, Yeovil.  This is due to the fact that St John's Church is undergoing extensive repairs.

The United Reformed Church have let us kindly use their premises this year and the Junior Commemoration Service is being held on

Thursday, 25th March at 2pm and the Senior Commemoration Service is being held on

Friday, 26th March at 22pm.  It has had to be split because it would be difficult to accommodate everyone in the Church at the same time.

I hope that you can attend one of these services, which is always a splendid occasion in the school year.

YEAR 7 EXPERIENCE

Year 6 will be experiencing Year 7 lessons in art, ICT, drama, science and German on Wednesday , 10th March.  This will give them a good idea what to expect for Year 7.

ISA CROSS-COUNTRY

Many congratulations to the Year 6 Team who took part in the championships at Rugby last Friday.  James Bridge finished 4th, John Hodder came 63rd and Declan Kinsella 66th.  The girls ran well to with Emma Denham coming 65th, Chloe Samuel 68th and Chloe Hunt 69th.  It was a great day and the children were a credit to us all.

PUBLIC SPEAKING

Once those Park School speakers start speaking it is very hard to stop them.  They were in good voice again on Thursday, taking on some of the very best young speakers in the south-west, in the District Finals of the Youth Speaks Competition.

The competitors had been winnowed from the 1500 or so young men and women from across Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire who had originally entered.

Our Intermediate team took to the stage in Frome Market whose splendid halls regularly show off some of the most well-bred creatures in the south-west.  Jessica Whittick Chaired our team, Ellen Bazley was Speaker and

Laura Coppard proposed the Vote of Thanks.  They were up against six other teams from as far away as the fringes of Exmoor and the Cotswolds.  It soon became obvious from the reaction of the hundreds of spectators packed into the hall that only two teams were really in contention for the top honours, and that they were evenly matched that opinion was divided and the result could go either way.  The Park was one of them, but on this occasion we had to be satisfied with being declared the Runners Up.  We subsequently discovered that the winning team had previously come third in the National Finals and their Speaker had actually won the National Competition.  Pipped to the post by the best in the land:  not bad for a small school from Somerset!

Meanwhile up in Bath another Coppard was in action.  Adam was Chairing the Senior team with Aaron Newbury as Speaker and Thomas Sankey proposing the Vote of Thanks.  They were competing with seven other teams and here too there was a very close contest, but on this occasion it was for who would come second and who would come third.  By general consent a single team was well ahead of the pack, in a class of its own, and we were very proud when

Aaron Newbury was declared Best Speaker and our team the Best Team in the three counties.  It is a brilliant achievement, boys – Well done!  They'll be taking on the rest of the west in a week or two in the Regional Finals, but that's not all:  tomorrow (Saturday, 6th March) they're in action again, in the District Final of the ESU Public Speaking Competition, in Exeter.
