Maths

Mr. K. R. Stevens heads the Mathematics department, aided and abetted by his wife and supported by several staff who teach in Key-Stage 3. At GCSE Level pupils follow a modular scheme which allows for great flexibility and which is examined at 6 points during the 2-year course.Key-Stage 3 results received at the end of Year 9 are a useful pointer to the correct entry level to GCSE in Year 10.Increasing numbers of pupils are finding that the modular approach enables them to achieve highly at this level and some are able to complete AS-level topics before reaching the Sixth Form. Thus they are well equipped to make informed decisions about further courses of study. The A- and AS-level syllabi are also modular in their organisation and numbers studying in the Sixth Form allow for considerable choice in units studied.Further Mathematics is also offered for the brave few! Learning is enhanced by association with the national Further Mathematics Network, which has been formed to encourage the pursuit of Mathematics beyond A-level standard and to encourage students to consider Mathematics at University.
Assessment follows the Park School policy and regular homework is set twice weekly in accordance with the same throughout the whole school. At the end of each year formal school examinations take place based on the current syllabus used, which is 'Mathematics Frameworking'.This scheme has an accompanying homework book which pupils can leave at home if they wish.At GCSE the examination board is OCR,whilst at A-level pupils follow the Edexcel syllabus.
