Reports for this week:-

Monday, 19th October u16 Hockey –v- Sexey's

Having to play on grass we knew this was not going to be an easy game, particularly with three players already away on holiday due to our early start for half-term.  We won the toss and attacked from the start, time after time our strikers pummelled the Sexey's goal mouth, but the ball refused to go in.  Once again patience was their key and eventually we scored.  In the second period Sexey's equalised, then offered superb resistance in defence as we mounted a continuous attack looking for the winner.  Eventually we wore them down and the sustained pressure paid off, giving us a 2-1 victory.  Player of the match – Lucy Gifford.  Special mention for Yasmin Andrews-Urvoy who was playing two years up to give us a full squad.

Tuesday, 20th October u16 Hockey –v- Huish Epicopi

Today's game was played on regardless of the torrential rain; the pitch was already churned up from continual use and within the first few minutes any skilful  play was a dream as it was like playing in 3 inches of mud.  Despite the ball barely moving our girls' remained calm, not letting the situation frustrate them and eked out a 3-0 win.  They are now through to the finals having won all their 'POOL' matches.  Player of the match – Hannah Law.  Special mention to    Ellen Bazley who had joined Yasmin playing two years up.

Monday, 26th October St Mary's Show Jumping at Motcombe

In Class 1 Hannah started really well, but then at fence 7 her pony decided he did not want to play anymore and refused, thus sadly eliminating Hannah.

In Class 2a Bethany's horse, unfortunately, went lame leaving Hannah and Isabella to compete as individuals.  Hannah had a comfortable clear round with her pony redeeming itself from class 1.  Isabella whizzed around the course with possibly the fastest round of the day, but then at the final moment jumped the wrong fence and so was eliminated.

11year old Isabella was then faced with a tedious 5 hour wait as she was the second to last competitor to go in class 3.  Here the fences were raised to 3' and the majority of the riders were 14+; this time Isabella had a super fast round to finish in 3rd place for the bronze medal.

What a wonderful day for both girls, with good results for the school show jumping team in only our second competition.

Wednesday, 4th November u13 Hockey –v- Gryphon

Having just lost 4-3 by Gryphon in the semi final last year our girl's were determined to put the record straight and attacked from the start.  The opposing defence somehow soaked up attack after attack, their goalkeeper was particularly good and the ball just did not go over the line.  However, we were patient and after 15 minutes a super square ball from Kate Gould on the left side of the 'D' avoided the keeper and Lucy Turner was there to knock it in.  The second half was almost a repeat performance as we continued to dominate; in fact Hannah Shilvock in our goal was not required to touch the ball throughout the entire game.  The pressure paid of and a very fast ball from just inside the 25 line from Isabella Foot sailed past everyone into the 'D' and Kate Gould hammered it in for a 2-0 victory.  These youngsters now join the year 11 squad in the semi finals later in the month.

Player of the match – Lucy Whitfield.

Thursday, 5th November u15 Football –v- Sherborne International

The encounter between the two teams before half-term resulted in a 3-3 draw resulting in an all out effort from both sides with each eager to secure the victory.  Needless to say the play was continuous end to end; we struck first and the response was automatic, fortunately Matthew Green in our goal kept the ball out.  We scored  again and hopes of a win were beginning to look good.  Our opponents then found the net prompting us to up our effort and we scored a third giving us a 3-1 cushion at half time.  In the second period we missed too many chances and relaxed leaving us a little vulnerable and the game turned; with 5 minutes to go we were suddenly trailing 4-3.  All out effort was called for and we managed to secure a fourth goal making the final result 4-4.  Player of the match – Sam Nash.

All pupils selected for representative matches must travel in a school tracksuit and wear the correct match strip; shin pads are compulsory for football and hockey; mouth guards are also strongly recommended for hockey.  Black shorts for boys continue to be available from the Uniform Shop, as do black skirts for girls and the latter item has the school sports logo on it.

OUR LINK SCHOOL IN INDIA

A big thank you to everyone who supported the Junior Department 'cake sale' and Senior Department 'hot dog sale'.  I was able to present the KMPC School in Bangalore with £200 as well as other educational resources.  This was greatly appreciated.  Photographs of the visit will appear on the website soon.

INTER-SCHOOLS DEBATING SOCIETY

Last night there was a packed and lively meeting of the inter-schools Debating Society at The Park.  In the first debate Thomas Sankey and Magenta Cousins opposed Leweston's proposition that The X Factor represents what's Best in Britain.  To our delight they won the vote – in spite of Mr Pender-Cudlip's treacherous defection.  In the second debate Chilton Cantelo defeated Sherborne Boys' proposition that It is a shame that Guy Fawkes was caught.  In addition to the platform speeches there were many erudite, witty and passionate floor speeches, from, amongst others, Chris Bunker, Thomas Sankey,

Magenta Cousins, Emily Mangles and Phillip Bakhardziev.  Everyone was particularly impressed with the maiden speeches from

Rory Mangles, James Eddey, Yarong Chi,

Hattie Stanley and Charlotte Rock.  The last three are not resting on their laurels:  in the next inter-schools competition they will be attacking the proposition that Blondes have more fun!

LONDON THEATRE TRIP

Please can everyone who wishes to come on the London Theatre Trip please return their slips to Mrs Scannell by Tuesday of next week at the latest.

SIXTH FORM OPEN EVENING

On Tuesday, 10th November The Park School Sixth Form will be holding an information evening between 5pm and 7pm.  While this event is aimed primarily at Year 11 students and their parents, all other years are welcome to attend.

TRIP TO PARLIAMENT

Unfortunately, we have had to postpone the school trip to the Houses of Parliament because the 18th November clashes with the State Opening by the Queen.  We have asked for an alternative date at either the end of February or the beginning of March 2010.

HOT CHOCOLATE CAFÉ FOR THE

BAKER KILIMANJARO EXPEDITION

From the 11th to the 20th December I am planning to repeat my climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise money for the Ndubaluba Outdoor Education Centre in the farming heartland of Zambia where I used to live.  I will be accompanied by two members of my family, two neighbours and a friend.  The centre is a marvellous success story where companies and fee paying schools subsidize children from local African schools so that a wide section of the community can benefit from the canoeing, cycling and camping courses that are available all with a strong Christian ethos.  We hope to avoid mountain sickness, elephants and being delayed on the return flight so that we can be home for Christmas.  On this one occasion please feel free to give your children something extra to help Ndubaluba make a real impact on the lives of Zambian young people.  If any parents wish to join the trip at this late stage, please feel free to join us.

Mr S Baker

TIMES BOOKS FOR SCHOOL

We are currently part of a great collection scheme that could provide us with hundreds of new books for the school library, and by collecting the special tokens printed in The Times and The Sunday Times, you can help claim dozens of free books.  Autumn term tokens will be available from 13th September to 6th December with four tokens in The Sunday Times News Review, three tokens in The Times on Saturday and one taken each day in Times from Monday to Friday.

Please collect as many tokens as you can and give them to your child to bring to school, marked for the attention of Miss Williams.

Many thanks, in advance, for your support.

Miss Willams (Year 4)

'CHILDREN IN NEED'

On Friday, 20th November there will be a mufti day in aid of 'Children in Need'.

BLUE PLASTIC BAGS

Blue plastic bags can be collected from the School Office.

These bags are a great opportunity to  help the school; help a very worthwhile charity and have a good clear out for winter.

Please could you put all your unwanted clothes, shoes, bedding, belts and handbags, but NO bric-a-brac,  into the bag and bring in to the school on the morning of

20th November (before 10am).

The contents are sent to people in need and the school receives money, according to the total weight of the bags we collect.

Please do not bring the bags before this date as we have nowhere to store them!!!!

The collection point for the bags will be the main school door (by the buzzer).

Thank you.
