The PTA are very excited to announce that after two and a half years of intense fund raising we are now able to place an order for some new playground equipment.  We would like to thank you all for your continued support which has made this possible.

We are holding an Auction of Promises and Gifts on 28th April, where we hope to raise enough money to complete the playground project and to purchase benches and equipment for the senior school.  We have an assortment of exciting lots: Yeovil Town Football Clubs mascot, dream car rides, sailing, a gourmet meal being cooked in your own home, gardening, archery lessons, pony trekking and much much more.

Tickets are £2.50 per person and this will include entry and supper.  Due to licensing laws we ask that you bring your own drinks.  Tickets are on sale from Mrs Farley in the Junior School Office or Mrs Williamson in the Uniform Shop.  Supper will be served from 6.30pm with the first lot to be auctioned at 7pm.

We look forward to seeing you at which we are sure will be a very enjoyable evening.

DEBATING CLUB

There is always a lot to squeeze in at the end of the short Spring term and the Club has had no less than three meetings over the last week.  On Saturday we played host to ninety or so visitors in the Regional Final of the ESU Mace, the oldest and largest schools debating tournament in Britain.  Amongst the eighteen qualifying schools, familiar locals like Thomas Hardye and Millfield shared the stage with exotics like Radley and Magdalen College School.  We had two teams taking part, comprising Tamsin Eddey,

Emily Mangles, Sam Ashdown and

Matthew Bayliss;  Sam and Matt were also drafted in as last minute makeweights when one of the schools failed to show up.  Nemesis came in the familiar form of our fellow contestants from up the A30, Bishop Wordsworth School.  Two weeks ago they became Regional Champions in the ESU Public Speaking competition, pushing us into second place, and they repeated the trick with The Mace.  It is a remarkable achievement, and we wish them very well in the National Finals of both competitions.  On Monday we went to Chilton Cantelo for another meeting of the Inter-Schools Debating Society.  In the first debate Adam Coppard and Tamsin Eddey opposed the motion that 'Young people should be denied access to the internet in schools', following the familiar ESU format.  For the second debate we switched to the more combative British Parliamentary style.  It was only three weeks ago that we were introduced to this style at The Oxford Union, but now our members can't get enough of it: like old prize-fighters they like to get the gloves off.  We mixed speakers from different schools in the same teams, so Chris Bunker, James Eddey, Sam Ashdown and Tamsin Eddey found themselves on opposite sides as we debated the motion that 'Looks are irrelevant'.  It was extremely lively debate with some funny as well as thought-provoking speeches, not least from Ross and Rory Mangles from the floor, and Adam needed all his authority as Chairman to keep things in order.  Our last

meeting was on Wednesday when

Abigail Squires and Hannah Thomas made their maiden speeches from the platform, opposing the motion that Conformity is the enemy of progress.  They were joined by Sam Ashdown, Yarong Chi, Natasha Dennington,

James Eddey, Jeannette Franks and

Tom Sankey in a thoughtful debate which ranged from science and philosophy to football and school uniforms.  We also had witty contributions from Ross and Rory Mangles, Hattie Sankey, Dominic Stephens and, in an apparently impromptu but beautifully crafted speech, Sasha Skinner.  It is good to see the former dominance of a few Sixth Form and Year 11 speakers challenged by so many younger pupils.
