TAUNUSSTEIN EXCHANGE 2010/11

For the past 12 years The Park School has maintained an exchange link with a school in Yeovil's twin town in Germany, the Gesamtschule Obere Aar in Taunusstein near Frankfurt.  Following six very successful exchange visits in recent years, plans are being made for the 7th such exchange for 2010/11.  The exchange is open to all pupils studying German in Years 8-11 next year.  A letter has been sent to parents via pupils this week giving approximate dates and other information.  Any parents who are interested in their son/daughter taking part in the exchange are requested to fill in the slip accompanying the letter by Thursday, 25th March to receive further details and a registration form next term.

PUBLIC SPEAKING

On Monday we were off again to participate in the Senior Public Speaking Competition at the Gryphon School, Sherborne.  This competition was cancelled at the last minute in 2009 so it was pleasing to be able to let the Junior Pupils have a go at the difficult art of speaking in front of an audience.

We sported two under 13 teams:

Gabriella Ball, Luke Brickley, Peter Francis,

Olive Holliday, Luke Humphrys and

Hugh Scannell.  They had nine teams with which to battle it out and Peter Francis and colleagues came second.  Olive Holliday's team came fourth.

Congratulations, once again, to our pupils who represented the school with such enthusiasm and aplomb.

DEBATING CLUB

The editor of this newsletter has suggested, in the nicest possible way, that the common good would be best served if the Debating Club report were kept brief this week.  Wherefore…..we met on 17th March to debate the proposition that "Our society's preference for watching rather than playing sport is unhealthy".  We debated in the British Parliamentary style, with James Eddey, Chris Bunker, Jeannette Franks,

Natash Dennington, Tamsin Eddey and

Emily Mangles on the platform, and

Dominic Stephens, Yarong Chi and

Sam Ashdown speaking from the floor.  It was ferocious at times but no serious injuries were sustained.  Tomorrow we will be hosting the Regional Final of the ESU Mace, with eighteen  schools participating, and on Monday we will be debating at Chilton Cantelo.  If you want to know more you will have to wait until next week when you should find something on the school website.
