THE TIMES BOOKS FOR SCHOOLS

We are currently part of a great collection scheme that could provide us with hundreds of new books for the school library, and by collecting the special tokens printed in The Times and The Sunday Times, you can help claim dozens of free books.  Autumn term tokens will be available from 13th September to 6th December with four tokens in The Sunday Times News Review, three tokens in The Times on Saturday and one taken each day in Times from Monday to Friday.

Please collect as many tokens as you can and give them to your child to bring to school, marked for the attention of Miss Williams.

Many thanks, in advance, for your support.

Miss Willams (Year 4)

SCOUT AND CUB AWARDS

Congratulations go to Christopher and Jonathan Burrows.

Christopher has been awarded Chief Scouts Gold Award for scouting.  This is the highest award a scout can be given.  It has involved international contact with American Scouts, Hiking, Camping and community involvement (helping with a large group of severely disabled children over many weeks and in his own time), and Christian camp.

Jonathan has been awarded the Chief Scouts Silver Award for Cub Scouting.  This award is also the highest award that a cub can be awarded which has involved hiking, camping, orienteering, first aid, animal care and Christian camp

DEBATING CLUB

On Thursday, 17th September the newly formed Debating Club joined Sherborne Boys School and Leweston School at Chilton Cantelo School, for the first in a series of inter-school debates.  Our aim is to build on the Park's strong tradition of public speaking by encouraging debating skills.  These are highly regarded by universities and employers, and are recognised as particularly valuable to students considering a career in law, the civil service, politics, academia, the media and management.    This year we will be entering at least one team in the ESU Mace, Europe's oldest and largest debating competition (past winners include Charles Kennedy MP, Professor Anthony Clare, Lord Hunt of Wirral and the late John Smith MP and Donald Dewar MP).

Our Head Girl Hannah Edwards was the first speaker of the evening, chairing the first debate (on assisted suicide) between Leweston and Sherborne Boys.  She quickly impressed her authority on the debate, tempering firmness with sensitivity and discretion.  In the second debate Emily Mangles  and Filip Bakardzhiev opposed Chilton Cantelo's proposition that 'Manners Maketh Man' with both wit and passion.  Aaron Newbury summed up in his unique style, combining humour with sharp observation.  There were some excellent speeches, in a wide variety of styles, from pupils of all four schools.  Hannah, Emily, Filip and Aaron all spoke from the floor in the first debate, and Adam Coppard, Hannah Law and Tom Sankey also made fine floor speeches.  It all made for an entertaining and productive evening.

The next inter-school debate will be just before half-term.  Details of the time, date and venue, and of the motions to be debated, will be published in due course.
