Year 8 History Trip
As you read the title of this article you may be wondering how a trip to a Chocolate Factory constitutes a History trip!
The Cadbury factory and the village of Bournville, with its parks, shops, hospital, places of worship, schools and sports facilities were purpose built by the Cadbury brothers, a Quaker family, to ensure that their workers did not have to endure the terrible conditions we usually associate with the factories and industrial towns of 19th century Britain. George Cadbury said, “But if each man could have his own house , a large garden to cultivate and healthy surroundings - then , thought , there will be for them a better opportunity of a happy family life .“
On the factory site there is a museum ‘the Bournville Experience’, which provides a wealth of information about the origins and development of Bournville and the lives of those who were fortunate enough to live and work there. After our visit to the Museum we took a walking tour of Bournville which remains largely untouched due to the land being part of a charitable Trust set up by the family in 1895. This provided the students with a much greater understanding of how the living conditions contrasted with the overcrowded slum housing many found themselves in.
This learning has been supplemented back at school within our history lessons, but also within Computing lessons as Mr Mylan has been looking at the 1891 Census data from Bournville enabling the students to gain a different perspective on the age and gender and marital status of the workers and their families.
Of course, as well as packing in lots of History we did make time to learn about the history of chocolate, how it is made, packaged and advertised. We even got to sample the products! We finished the day with a visit to the shop to stock up on supplies before journeying back to school.
The students all enjoyed themselves as you can see from their comments:
Amelia, “It was an amazing trip.”
Jessica, “The Cadbury trip is well worth going on.”
Ruby, “Great, fun day!”
Harvey, “I enjoyed it, I wanted to walk around the village more!”
And finally, Ben, “It was one of the best trips I’ve ever been on!”
