The newly formed Debating Club

2nd October 2009

As part of our extra-curricular programme we are delighted to announce that amongst our activities we have a newly formed Debating Club, which will be joined by pupils from Sherborne Boys School, Leweston School and Chilton Cantelo for a series of debates during the coming year.  Our club has started with a great deal of enthusiasm: our Sixth Form and GCSE students have lead the way, but younger pupils are taking an increasingly active part in the debates.

Some of the Debaters: front to back Aaron Newbury (Year 11), Emily Mangles (Year 12), Adam Coppard (Year 11), Thomas Sankey (Year 11) and Filip Bakardzhiev (Year 13).

The aim of the Debating Club is to build on The Park's strong tradition of public speaking by encouraging debating skills.   These are highly regarded by universities and employers, and are recognised as particularly valuable to students considering a career in the law, the civil service, politics, academia, the media and management.   This year we will be entering at least one team in the ESU Mace, Europe's oldest and largest debating competition (past winners include Charles Kennedy MP, Professor Anthony Clare, Lord Hunt of Wirral, and the late John Smith MP and Donald Dewar MP).
