Students go on multi-activity weekend

11th May 2007

At the end of April ten students from year 10 and their tutors, Mrs Shillito and Mr Newbery, went on a multi-activity weekend in Snowdonia.

The long journey was broken by a lunchtime stop at Ironbridge Outdoor Museum where there is a reconstructed Victorian town and various remains from the industry which sprung up at this seat of the industrial revolution.  Actors in character occupy the houses and shops and craftsmen and women carry on with traditional activities.  However the students most enjoyed all the fun of the fair on Victorian swing boats and carousel (after they had shopped in the sweetshop!).

Then it was on to the youth hostel at the southern end of Snowdon.  We have visited this hostel 5 times now and always enjoyed excellent food and accommodation.

On the Saturday the students did a 12 km walk in glorious sunshine over a variety of terrains including forest, lakeside and open highland.  One group took the opportunity to improve their navigation skills ready for their silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition.  Their efforts were rewarded with an ice-cream in Beddgelert followed by a rather cold swim in the lake.

The second day was multi-activity day at the National Mountaineering Centre, Plas-y-Brenin.  By consensus the students had chosen canoeing, abseiling and raft building but it was the latter activity with its need for teamwork which was by far the most popular.

And so Monday came and the long journey home broken only by one short "comfort stop" and a fifteen-minute visit to the amazing Pontcysyllte aquaduct near Llangollen.
