Students collect data in the wild
11th May 2007At the beginning of May Year 10 visited the Kingcombe Centre to experience data collection in the fresh water!
Pupils used 'Kick Sampling' to collect organisms from the River Hooke. They then identified and counted the creatures.

In the afternoon, despite the rain, the pupils pursued data collection of mosses & lichen from trees, as well as investigating food pyramids & life in ponds. They also tested the nitrate content in the water as a measure of pollution and the speed of flow.

One highlight of the day was when the students found an American Crayfish! This species of crayfish is an alien thought to have arrived through imported ballast. It is a ferocious predator and is displacing the native crayfish from this type of habitat.
