Sports Day 2008
4th July 2008This year we had one of the most exciting Sports days ever held. The weather was glorious and the pupils set about their activities with determination and enthusiasm.

James McInness heads the field in the 800m
Last year's champions, Ashley, planned to hold onto their title by ensuring their most athletic members from Year 11 and the Sixth Form were entered into as many events as the rules allowed! Slessor started the afternoon with straight wins in the hurdles races. Then Shaftesbury started pulling in the points with Jacob Lisle sprinting to victory in the final hurdles race.

From then on the Shaftesbury runners were in rampant mood and almost completely dominated all the remaining races; most notably, Felicity Squires, who kept the lead from the start in the 800m, running her fastest time ever by over 3 seconds. By the time the relays arrived Shaftesbury had an unassailable lead on the track and to really make their presence felt, Freyia Crawford flew out of the blocks in the first relay leading her team, as captain, to 3 winning out of 4 of these races.

Meanwhile out on the field Andrew Deighton in the Year 7&8 Livingstone team was performing in the Javelin where he broke the school record by over 5m, even surpassing the existing Year 9&10 record by 3 metres. This fabulous feat obviously fired up Edward Butcher of Slessor who followed with another 5 metre plus record in the Year 9/10 entry. Slessors' team captain Jessica Houghton took firm note of Edward's achievement and used it to inspire her field squad and they romped away to no less than 11 victories.

So, the track results to Shaftesbury and the field to Slessor. Unbelievably, when the scores were added together both teams had 142 and Sport day finished in a "Draw". Congratulations to both teams.
