Lions Club Art Awards
4th December 2008
Year 8 pupils have undertaken a wonderful variety of posters for this year's theme of "Peace begins with me" organised by the Lions Club. There were over 200
entries from Yeovil schools. We are delighted to confirm that The Park had three
winners, all in Year 8: Joseph Brown was awarded third place, Isabelle Zanelli
second place and Jessica Whittick was awarded first place for the Park School.
Isabelle Zanelli's poster then went onto to be awarded second place and Jessica
Whittick won first place to represent Yeovil. Their pictures can be seen below.
But it does not stop there! The district competition was held recently in Cornwall and Isabelle Zanelli's poster was awarded second prize and Jessica Whittick's won first prize and will they will be representing the South West in the National competition later this month. A fantastic result for the two girls and for the school.
Both Jessica and Isabelle with their parents are invited to attend an award ceremony in Plymouth in March of next year. David Egon, Stuart Loder, the past president and Trevor Slade youth officer for the Yeovil Lions club came into our assembly very recently to present the award and reveal the fantastic news about the district winners. Mrs Briggs (Head of Art) would like to say a huge well done to all pupils who took part for their high quality work that they entered for this competition.

Jessica explains, "My peace poster shows a dove in front of the rays of the Sun, holding an olive leaf in its beak. The rainbow ribbon around its neck and the leaves it carries represent the story of Noah and God's promise of peace to us. The dove's wings are made of the hands of people from around the world, with the fingernails painted with the flags of the countries. One of these hands is my own and that is how I fulfilled the subject of 'Peace beginning with me'. I chose to use the hands of people from around the world, overlapping and layered on top of each other to create the wings of the dove, as this shows that if we work together, in peace, we can create something truly beautiful".

Isabelle says, "My poster is all about peace beginning in the world and the love for the world. Peace and happiness are keeping the world safe. The flags are bringing the countries closer together. The rainbow is peace spreading across the world. The clouds at the bottom represent Heaven and the dove rises out of Heaven. The yellow background indicates the Sun shines on us all and we will always have light to guide us".

Joseph Brown's picture came third and he says, "My hand is releasing the dove to symbolise peace. The dove is carrying a rainbow behind it as a symbol of hope as it travels towards the glowing Earth".
