Ashley regain the Cross Country Title

13th November 2009

Despite a foggy, dark and cold November morning there was much enthusiasm amongst the pupils as they gathered once again for the annual cross country event.

The Year 8 pupils set off in brisk manner!

Current champions, Ashley, were confident that they would retain the title as the Sports Captains marshalled their teams into positions, and not before some warm activities had taken place!  Clearly, they were out to win again.  However, Slessor were quietly confident of toppling Ashley, and their Sports Captains were busy giving out encouragement as well as instructions.

No Ashley runners to be seen as competitors appear out of the fog!

Nearly all the pupils in the senior school were running, and all the races began at a brisk pace as they were keen to warm themselves on such a cold day!  All the runners did extremely well, and depite some competitors having to walk some stretches of the course, everyone was cheered as they approached the finishing line.  Every pupil and student who completed the course scored points for their Houses.  There were a number of outstanding performances: Isabella Foot (Livingstone) won the Year 7 race outsprinting the boys to win by 1 second! Year 9 pupil, Philip Bridge (Ashley) won so easily that it was 2 minutes before another of his year crossed the line, and Felicity Squires (Shaftesbury) won in Year 11 by over a minute.  But who would triumph overall?  Ashley House members won 4 of the 6 races, their best performance was in the Year 11 event when they had the  first 4 across the line plus Alice Barnett and Adam Coppard both finishing in the top ten.

The Year 10 event

Our PE staff were busy adding up the points, and announced that Ashley had, not surprisingly, ran out winners again with 911 points, Slessor were second with 799 points, Shaftesbury scored 737 points, leaving Livingstone to pick up the first wooden spoon of the academic year!

Some Year 7 pupils showing plenty of enthusiasm!
