History
GCE (A-level), Years 12 – 13
The full A-level course comprises four equal units. Units 1 and 2 go towards the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) grade and Units 3 and 4 go towards the Advanced (A2) grade. AS History is a stand-alone qualification but when it is supplemented by A2 History the two together make up a full A-level.
Unit 1 comprises two outline studies from the same era of English, European or world history. Unit 2 is a study in depth of a period of English or British history. Unit 3 is a study in depth of a period of English, European or world history together with an associated controversy. Unit 4 is an individual enquiry investigating historical change over an extended period of English, British, European or world history.
Units 1 and 2 are assessed by examination during Year 12. Unit 3 is assessed by examination and Unit 4 by a written assignment (up to 4000 words long), both during Year 13.
