Music
Music Key Stage 3 In Years 7 to 9, in Music Classes the students learn:
1) Play music actively in the classroom,
2) Read and write music using staff notation with the support of the Associated Board’s music theory workbooks.
3) Listen and appreciate music, learning to use musical vocabulary in describing and explaining musical pieces of different genres.
4) Use various musical devices that make up the different historical styles and genres, how to identify these genres and to use their elements creatively.
5) The students are actively encouraged to be a part of a school performance group, especially if they are taking private lessons on an instrument. We have a Jazz Band, Senior Choir and Senior Orchestra at our student’s disposal, and regular performances are scheduled.
GCSE Music
In this course pupils cover four units leading to one GCSE grade for the GCSE Music Qualification at the end of Year ll. The first two units have a 30% weighting and units 3 and 4 have 15% and 25% respectively.
1) There is a performance piece played and recorded by the student and a composition showing the elements of the performance piece.
2) The student prepares a recording of an ensemble performance and a composition
3) A Creative Task is set under examination conditions, and this involves the student composing a piece of music to a set stimulus using melodic devises and appropriate chordal or two-voice accompaniment.
4) At the end of Year 11, a national listening examination will be set and the student answers a set of questions pertinent to the styles that we have studied these past two years.
