WORLD BOOK DAY

We are very delighted to be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 1st March. Mrs Topliss and Aaron Newbury are busy concocting a wild and exciting World Book Day assembly for all to enjoy, followed by the annual judging of our 'Come dressed as your favourite book character' competition (entry £1 for charity). Students may bring a change of clothes if their costumes are particularly adventurous. Next, the acclaimed children's author, Joffre White will be running a creative writing workshop for Years 5-8. Joffre is due to release his book 'Frog and the Sandspiders of Aridian' on the 29th March, but has agreed to release some advance (signed!) copies for The Park School. If you would like a copy please give Mrs Topliss £8.50 for a hardback or £7.50 for a paperback. Lastly, there will be £1 book token available for everyone!

TOYBOX APPEAL

The Junior department supports the work of the Toybox Charity which works with the street children in South America. Each week, during our Wednesday assemblies, the children collect small change to send to the charity. Please could you send in a few coins each Wednesday morning so we can continue to support this valuable work. Find out more on www.toybox.org.uk

BOYS UNDER 11'S HOCKEY

On Wednesday, a team comprising boys from Years 5 and 6 played a friendly match against Sherborne Prep. Victory was not to be theirs on this occasion, but valuable experience was gained by both sides. Well done all of you.

UNDER 9'S NETBALL

On Tuesday, a team of under 9's played netball against Sherborne Prep. All the hard work that has been put in by the team and Miss Procter during netball practice paid off handsomely as our team stormed to a superb 8-0 victory. A brilliant result that bodes well for the future – well done all of you.

TOBY STOCK

On Monday, Toby Stock visited the school and gave an illustrated talk to years 5, 6 and 7 about life during WWI. He was in role as a WWI soldier, showing the children many genuine artefacts belonging to a local soldier who had survived the war and explaining how these were used. Particularly poignant were the postcards and sweetheart cards that had been sent home from the front. We look forward to welcoming Toby back later in the year to talk about WWII.

JUNIOR DEPARTMENT CHESS

We will be continuing the tournament after half term.

YOUTH SPEAKS OUT

'Busy busy busy' would be a fair description of the recent activities of our student speakers. Sixteen of them spent from Friday to Sunday night in London as delegates at the Model United Nations Conference at Lady Eleanor Holles School. Aaron Newbury, Louis Patterson, Charlotte Cartwright and Connor Young represented Italy, Natasha Dennington, Ross Mangles, Ellen Bazley and Jessica Stosiek Jamaica,

Douglas Corner, Tamsin Eddey and Olive Holliday Romania and Thomas Sankey, Adam Coppard,

Hattie Stanley, Charlotte Rock and Luke Brickley The People's Republic of China. Having nobbled the Press and suborned the Secretariat they scooped the official and unofficial awards: a report with photographs can be seen on the school website and more photographs will be added shortly.

Thomas, Tamsin and Adam were back in action two days later when they became District Champions in the Senior Youth Speaks public speaking competition run by Rotary International. Their talk, detailing the delights of owning a shed delighted the judges, who commended them on their impudence. Tom Sankey also won the much coverted Best Speaker Medal. They now progress to the final in Bath next month. A report will be posted on the school website shortly.

Thomas and Tamsin were in action again the following night in the second round of the ESU Mace Debating Competition at Blundell's School and we are pleased to announce that The Park will be hosting the Regional Final of The Mace on 15th March. And there is more! We will be sending teams to:

The Bristol University Schools Debating Competition on 18th February,

The Oxford Union Schools Debating Competition on 20th February,

The Chilton Cantelo Debates on 21st February,

The Youth Speaks (Intermediate) District Final on

29th February,

The Bath International Schools Model United Nations Conference 2nd – 4th February

The ESU Public Speaking Regional Final on 4th March,

The Youth Speaks (Senior) Regional Final on

12th March and

The Queens College Model United Nations Conference on 17th March.

In the summer we hope to hold our own Model United Nations Conference at The Park if we still have the energy!
