THE DEBATING SOCIETY
Three motions were debated by the Society this week, at two separate meetings. They ranged from the parochial ("Sweets should be banned in school") to the political ("Capital Punishment should be restored") to the transcendental ("Being raised in any religion is harmful to children and they should chose for themselves when they are adults"). Opinions were sharply divided and, as ever in The Society, the arguments were keenly fought with virtually every member intervening in the debate several times. Those present included Felix Powell, Kammy Singh, Zoe Braddick, Luke Brickley, Lucy Eaton-Ball,
Emily Williams, Kate Tomsett, Kate Gould,
Lucy Turner, Emily Mennell, Olive Holliday,
Jeannette Franks, Louis Patterson and Ross Mangles.
Congratulations to three of our senior debaters, Tamsin Eddey, Thomas Sankey and Adam Coppard, who last took on five other teams in Rotary International's Youth Speaks competition and won.

PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION FOR OVERSEAS STUDENTS
On Tuesday evening two of our pupils took part in a public speaking competition at King's, Bruton.
Kelvin Poon gave a witty and entertaining talk on scarves, and Ewan Wu spoke movingly about his home town and the development which has taken place meaning his childhood memories of playing in fields with friends was now just a memory. He was ably supported by Anthony Tse. The standard was extremely high and the judges had a difficult decision to make, and although the boys didn't win, they performed extremely well. Well done! Thank you to Mrs Huntington for accompanying us.
Mrs Twist and Mrs Edney.

Toby Stock
Next week, Toby Stock will be visiting the school again to talk to years 5, 6 and 7 about life during WWI. There will be a letter home giving further details of the visit.
MY MATHS
Over the next few weeks, children in years 5 and 6 will be issued with codes to access 'MyMaths'. This is an online mathematics site that provides structured practice at appropriate levels for each individual child. Your child will be given a letter with all the relevant information and we hope to be able to use 'MyMaths' in lessons as well as for prep. Should you have any queries, please ask your child's teacher.
VIOLIN RECITAL
On Wednesday, the Juniors were treated to a violin recital and demonstration by Lucy-Anne Allen, our peripatetic violin teacher. Aided by Ivy Holliday,
Ms. Allen showed the children something of the range of music a violin is capable of and told them a little about the exciting life she leads as a result of playing the violin (she has played soundtrack music for X-Box and feature films amongst other things) Anyone who might have been inspired to start playing the violin as a result of Wednesday can obtain more information from Mrs. Huntington or Mrs Ellis.
JUNIOR FOOTBALL
The football teams have been out in force this week, playing matches against several local schools. The Years 3, 4 and 5 Team played against Sunninghill, conceding defeat by 4-2.
