REPORTS

At the end of this term we will be sending reports out for the first time via email, as mentioned in the newsletter last summer. We have the email addresses of most parents, but if you know that you have not yet supplied us with this information please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to give us your up to date email address by Friday 2nd December, so this can be added to the database. During next week we will do a test run to all parents by sending you a letter as an attachment to an email. We would like you to acknowledge this by replying to the email, so we know that we have made contact. We expect to email all reports out during the first week of the holiday, so if you do not receive your report by Friday

16th December, please let us know and we will remedy the situation. As you will appreciate, this is designed to be much more environmentally friendly and it will save us paper and postage.

LIONS CLUB INTERNATIONAL ART PEACE POSTER COMPETITION – 'CHILDREN KNOW PEACE'

Well done to all Year 8 artists who entered this year's International Peace Poster competition organised by the Lions Club. The standard was very high as usual this year but the following pupils work was particularly commended by the Lions Club committee: first prize was awarded to

Eleanor Brooks, second prize was awarded to

Rebecca Cartwright and third prize was awarded to

Emma Denham. Highly commended certificates were also awarded to James Bridge, Daniel White, Grace Busby,

Chloe Samuel, Georgia Mullis and Lucy Sainsbury. Congratulations to Ellie; her poster will go on to represent The Park School in the next stage of the competition. Mr Slade, the Somerset Lions Club representative will be coming to school shortly to present these awards in an assembly.

FOOTBALL

Several matches were played this week. On Wednesday, a team of players from years 5 and 6 played against Preston Primary School. Victory was not to be theirs on this occasion, but they played well and gained valuable experience of playing on grass pitch. Wednesday also saw years 3 and 4 play Thornlow at home, resulting in a 0-0 draw. Well done football players! Thursday saw years 4, 5 and 6 in action again at home to Chilton Cantelo. It was a nail-biting match, but our team gained a 2-1 victory, the goals being scored by

Daniel Blackburn and Aditya Roshan. Well done to all who took part – you must be exhausted!

YEOVILTON FLEET AIR ARM MUSEUM ENGINEERING CHALLENGE DAY

Two Year 11 teams represented The Park School last Friday at the Engineering Challenge Day organised by the Fleet Air Arm Museum. After a brief introduction and a tour of the museum the teams were set the task of designing a cockpit system to operate the surface controls located on the tail and wings of an aeroplane. Pupils had to buy the components that they needed from a shop and were told that spending as little as possible would earn them extra points. Both teams worked very hard on this challenging task and presented their designs well, but team Sea Fury managed to complete a fully functioning model complete with an electronic lighting system linked with the surface controls of their aeroplane and were awarded with the first prize trophy! Congratulations in particular to the Sea Fury team whose members were

Ross Mangles, Natasha Dennington, Emily Francis,

Joseph Brown, Louis Patterson and Ewen Wu. To gain the overall first prize for The Park School, against such good competition was a real achievement – well done!

PENSIONS DEBATE

Our members may not be drawing their pensions for almost 60 years but they had plenty to say on the topical motion that "Older people should retire earlier on reduced pensions so that younger people can inherit their jobs and not their debts". If you think such things interest only older students you would be quite wrong: most of our speakers this week were under 13. Strangers to the ways of the world they may be but by golly they can think, and argue! In her maiden speech Kate Tomsett, one of the youngest pupils in the Senior School, took on Thomas Sankey, one of the oldest, and in between we heard repeatedly from Zoe Braddick,

Grace Busby, Lucy Eaton-Ball, Lucy Sainsbury and

Elena Williamson. To the relief of the Chairman (who is no longer in the first flush of youth) our young speakers initially showed great sympathy towards their elders but as they explored the implications of the pensions' crisis they began to take a rather harder line. Balance was only restored through an unprecedented intervention by Mrs Hancock and

Mr Coles. They are among the youngest and oldest members of the school staff and their eloquence, born out of personal experience, illuminated the human realities which lie behind all the statistics. It was a cracking debate.

CHRISTMAS CAROL SERVICE

The annual school carol service will take place in Saint John's Church at 2-00pm on Friday 9th December. Kindergarten and Reception will finish school at 1-00pm on that day whilst the remainder of the school will all attend the church service. All parents are warmly invited to join us for the service and children can be collected from the church at 3-00pm. Please note that there will be no late room on that evening.

BREAKFAST WITH SANTA

There will be an opportunity for the junior children, their parents and friends to enjoy a continental style breakfast with Santa on Thursday 8th December from 8-30am.
