Sports Day

Whilst Tuesday 5th July could not be called glorious weather wise; it certainly can when we talk about the athletics on show. This year we had an extremely talented group taking part and they certainly lived up to their reputation with no less than 8 senior school records being broken. This coupled with countless junior school records falling made the Sports Day a huge success.
Proceedings began with year 3 over 55m hurdles and instantly Abbie White and Simeon Andrews-Urvoy set new records. James Tomsett followed by taking the year 4 record to make junior hurdles a great opening event. Meanwhile the senior competition got under way with year 9+ girls 300m and boys 400m. As the day progressed it became clear that year 7/8 competitor Isabella Foot would be the star of the day. She opened her account with a new 200m record and was immediately followed by James Bridge who also broke the year7/8 boys 200m record. Half an hour later Isabella reduced the 70m hurdles record by over a full second. Then just before the lunch break she shaved 0.07 second off the 100m record to take her third title of the day. She later went on to also win both the shot putt and Javelin.
Well, there was a real buss in the air during lunch. Could the afternoon session possibly match the morning? We restarted with junior school sprints and whow! This tiny, tiny, frame of young Megan Titchener flew down the 55m so fast that if you had blinked you would have missed and the record was smashed. What a great resumption and it just got better. NationalISA Champion James Bridge stepped onto the track for the year 7/8 boys 800m and gave a fantastic demonstration of speed endurance. The race was actually over after the very first step, but he thrilled everyone watching and eased into a new school record by over 4 seconds. Yet more was to come as next, older brother Philip was due to run the year 9+ 800m and the talk was that Raymund Pau intended to give him a tough time. Well done Raymund , for he certainly tried and at the gun he absolutely took off like a hare. This actually inspired Philip to show what he was made of and he sped alongside for the first 200m before taking the lead and pulling Raymund into a super fast first 400m. At the bell Philip opened his legs and pulled away to break the record by over 6 seconds. Our field event athletes were not letting the runners have all the glory as James Rock broke the year 7/8 discus record and Alexander Gurd broke the year9+ discus record. As ever the relays closed the day and the final result was a clear win for Ashley as they retained their title.
Back to the juniors and it became clear that the long term future of school athletics is in good hands as the following all broke existing records.
- Adidtya Roshan and Kerryn Mullis year 3 Soft Hammer
- Oliver West year 5 Soft Hammer with a massive throw of 33.6 metres.
- George Chapman and Kamakshi Singh year 6 Soft Hammer
- Simeon Andrews-Urvoy and Kerryn Mullis year 3 javelin
- James Tomsett and Esmee Williamson year 4 javelin
- Oliver West year 5 javelin
- Tom Lewis and Bethany Yates year 6 Javelin.
In all a really super day and we can now look forward to next year when Sports Day will be held on Thursday 28th June.
